Formerly The Ballpark at St. John's, the St. John's baseball
team's home venue was renamed Jack Kaiser Stadium in January 2007.
Named after Hall of Fame head coach John W. "Jack" Kaiser, the
stadium was originally constructed in the spring of 2000 on the
site of the former McCallen Field. The facility has seating for
3,500 spectators, an electronic scoreboard in centerfield, a press
box, lighting and public address system.
"We have really enjoyed playing in our home field the last six
years," St. John's head coach Ed Blankmeyer said. "It helps because
it makes our guys want to go to the ballpark. The playing surface
puts us in the top three in the league, and the facility is one of
the best in this region."
The Red Storm enjoyed five strong seasons at The Ballpark at St.
John's, posting a 112-38 record in 150 games, before its renaming
this winter. St. John's has won 19 home games in each of the last
two seasons, posting a dominant 19-4 home mark in 2006 and a 19-7
record in its BIG EAST championship season in 2005.
Kaiser has been part of the St. John's athletics family for
nearly 60 years, first as a baseball, basketball and soccer player
in the late 1940's, then as a coach from 1952-1973, the Director of
Athletics from 1973-1995 and currently Athletic Director Emeritus.
Throughout his career at St. John's, Kaiser has been one of the
baseball program's biggest supporters. He led teams to the College
World Series as both a player and a coach, then went on to provide
department-wide leadership as the Director of Athletics for 23
years.
An American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and Atlantic
Collegiate Baseball League (ACBL) Hall of Famer, Kaiser remains
involved with both the St. John's program and the ACBL, a
sanctioned summer league that he co-founded. Kaiser also co-founded
the BIG EAST Conference in his role as Athletic Director at St.
John's, and the league has commemorated Kaiser's achievements for
the last 22 years as the namesake for the conference baseball
tournament's Most Outstanding Player award.
In its first season at Jack Kaiser Stadium, the Red Storm looks
to continue its excellence on its home turf. St. John's begins its
home schedule on Wednesday, March 14 against Albany and plays six
non-conference home contests before taking on Rutgers (March
30-April 1) in its first BIG EAST series. The three games against
the Scarlet Knights are part of a 12-game home stand that also
includes conference series against Villanova (April 5-7) and
Pittsburgh (April 13-15).
St. John's wraps up its home conference slate with matchups
against two of the newest members of the 12-team baseball league.
Louisville comes to Queens on May 5-6, and Cincinnati arrives for a
three-game series from May 11-13.
