Hi there, this is Kat Lawrence, pitcher for the St. John's softball team. We are entering the final countdown: 11 Days until our first game!
Workout and practices have been going well. Fundamentals and explosiveness have been our themes. Also, with excitement, and numb fingers, I report we have been able to play outside for most of the winter! We even pitched on the dirt one day! I know, it's unbelievable. However, the recent cold spell has sent us back into the gym these last few days. Hardwood floors mike one pine for dirt and grass.
Stacia Dopudja, Coach K, and I were lucky enough to attend the St. John's Bullpen Banquet. It was extremely nice to dress up and enjoy a night in the city after spending many days in sweaty workout shirts. But it was not just the dress that made it a great night. We met professional baseball players and heard from Ron Darling. The best part was being around men who loved playing the game and did not take a moment for granted. We were reminded how lucky we are to be Division I athletes.

There is nothing like getting back on the field after a long summer away from it. We had our first taste of competition this last weekend, going a respectable 3-1 in the St. John's Fall Tournament. The returning players showed off their strengths, especially Kristi Cadywho broke up an opposing pitcher's no hitter. Nevertheless, the freshmen were ready to prove themselves. Jordan Tingleycame in and shut down Manhattan, while Amber Curry showed off her bat with a home run. Overall, a pretty successful weekend.
However, this weekend was not just about wins and statistics. With only three practices in, it was a great chance to test out our mental game. Before each day we set goals for ourselves and worked on visualizing and breathing. This worked extremely well for the first three games, but mental and physical fatigue set in by the fourth game. This is obviously something that we need to work on.
As a team, one of our major goals is to remain mentally and physically strong through the entire season. Last season we reached peak performance a little too early, and did not play to our best abilities at the BIG EAST Tournament. This year we are working hard with coach Lauren Motzkin and coach Rob Basile off the field to improve our mental and physical conditioning.
We face LIU this Thursday and would love nothing more than beat them. Our last two games against them have been some hard losses. I'll let you know how it goes.
Hello there! This is Kat Lawrence, pitcher from the Red Storm softball team.
It's been a pretty casual summer so far. Once the softball team got back from the Big East Tournament in May, we all finished up our finals, and set up our housing for the upcoming school year. Kristi Cadymoved in with Stacia Dopudjaand me, and we love having her as our roommate. After taking a week off, I got back in the weight room with coach Rob Basile. I definitely worked my butt off, but I want to be prepared for next season.
Before heading home to California, I had lots of fun working at the Amy Kvilhaug Red Storm Camp in mid-July. It is great to be able to work with young girls who are excited about the sport and watch them improve over the week. My teammates and I were able to experience softball from the coaching perspective, and I loved it!
Now that I'm back in Rohnert Park, I've been soaking up as much sun and pool time as possible. I am also finishing my online summer school courses while keeping up on my workout schedule. It is great to home and see old friends, but I am ready to be back in New York and start the fall season.
Hope everyone is having a great summer. Write to you soon.
