Hey, it's Kayla from the St. John's volleyball team!
Returning to Queens from Christmas and the beach and sunny weather in Hawaii was not fun I'll admit, but we do it every year somehow! It was so good to see family and friends, and just be home for the holidays in general. I get to eat all the local food that I miss when I'm away AND become tan again so those were the perks of Christmas break. Now it's time to begin the spring semester fresh.
This spring, one of our team's main goals is returning to the weight room. We are re-focusing on our strength training as a key part in rebuilding our team and ensuring the success of the upcoming 2010 season in the fall. We would like to return to the court not only as physically stronger, fitter individuals, but also use that training to help us become mentally stronger as a team in realizing our potential to rise to the top of the BIG EAST once again.
We are also participating in more community service events this semester not only to assist those of the community, but to also bring our team together in the spirit of giving back.
Wish us luck!

Aloha! It's Kayla Motoyama from the volleyball team. We just finished practice at Villanova after a three-hour bus ride from Queens. Now we're all really hungry and waiting to eat at this cute Italian restaurant, Bertucci's. Ashley Asing and I are going to split spaghetti & meatballs and four-cheese ravioli. YUM! We love being on the road as a team because it brings us closer together.
We are looking forward to our match at Villanova tomorrow. They are a good defensive team this season and we are ready and excited to compete with them, especially in that category. We're always up for the challenge of out-digging our opponents; its part of what we've always done well in this program. Now for a good night's rest!
Good Night and go Johnnies!!! - #22 Kayla Motoyama
Hey fans, its Jordan Haskins from the volleyball team. This past weekend we traveled to Georgetown and USF. My family doesn't live far from Washington, D.C., so they came to the Georgetown game. It was great to see my parents and little sister. We stayed at a hotel in Crystal City, Va., just over the Key Bridge and the people there were so nice to us! We left Virginia on Saturday morning after a hearty breakfast to go to the airport for short flight to Tampa.
We went to practice on the USF campus and worked on some rotations for Sunday's match before going to dinner. The next morning, we got together for breakfast and packed our things before heading to The Corral for the match.
The team was very energetic and had a good feeling about the day. We had a great warm up and started the game well. I held the block for Kun Song and she got the first kill of the game. Everything was perfect. As the score reached 3-1, the lights went out.
After a few minutes, they turned the music on and everyone started dancing. The crowd, and both teams, made the most of the time in the dark with a full-on dance party. Darlene Ramdin and I started the electric slide and the crowd moved down to the court to dance. The officials cancelled the match at 2 p.m. and we left for the airport to return to New York. This weekend, our team will raise money for breast cancer awareness at our match against Syracuse. Come and watch us take on the Orange with some pink accessories in our first game in the newly renovated Carnesecca Arena this season!

Hey fans, its Ruisa Scheffel.
The past few weeks have been busy for the volleyball team. We have a bunch of new players and we are getting to know each other better. It is a lot of fun to meet the new girls and help them to adapt. Each day we get to know each other better. The girls on our team represent seven different countries! Our team is so diverse and it makes things so interesting.
Preseason is always very intense. We mixed it up with beach workouts and practiced on the court as well. Training on the beach is good for all of us because it makes us move faster on the court.
We all love volleyball and we are all here for the same reasons -- to be successful as a team and represent St Johns the best way possible. Everyone is excited for the season, and working very hard to get our fourth BIG EAST Regular Season championship!!! Everyone is putting a lot of effort to make the team better and that makes it exciting to come to practice everyday.
We got our first win of the season last night at Stony Brook and it felt great to put all the pieces together.
I am excited for our first home game this weekend and can't wait to host the STJ Classic tournament. Come out and support us against Boston College at 8 p.m. in Taffner Field House Friday!
