Jan. 16, 2014
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John’s dance team is headed to Orlando, Fla., this weekend to compete in the 2014 Universal Dance Association (UDA) College Cheerleading & Dance Team Championships.
The two-day event will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 18-19, at the Walt Disney World Resort as the St. John’s dance team competes against Division I teams from across the nation in both the Hip Hop and Jazz categories.
Led by captains Amy Cork and Gianna Sondon, the 2014 St. John’s dance team is comprised of 16 female and one male dancers and for two seniors, Maria Christianson and Alex Bello, this marks the final national competition as a part of the Red Storm squad.
“This particular team has worked incredibly hard over the past few months to get ready for competition,” said head coach Christine McCarton. “I could not be more proud of all of the hard work and hours they have put in since we started in August and can’t wait for them to hit the national stage this weekend.”
Since taking a program-best second place in 2011, St. John’s has finished among the top 10 in Hip Hop in each of the past two years, taking fifth and eighth place, respectively.
