KISSIMMEE, Fla. - This past weekend, the St. John's dance team shined at the 2011 College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Kissimmee, Fla. The team took home second place in the Division I Hip Hop division.
"This team has worked wonderfully together all year and met and exceeded our expectations," said ninth-year St. John's dance head coach Christine McCarton.
St. John's dance team finished runner-up to the University of Delaware, falling just half a point short of taking the championship in the Division I Hip Hop division. In the finals, STJ outscored Hofstra, Saint Joseph's (Pa.), Southeastern Louisiana, Missouri State, Temple, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Cal State-Long Beach and Illinois-Chicago. Last year, the team took 11th in the Division I Hip Hop division. This year's second-place showing tops the St. John's previous best finish of third place in the Division I Jazz division at the 2005 UDA Nationals.
The team was in fifth place following the 19-team semi-finals and surged ahead in the finals.
"During our rehearsal time, we discussed all of the minor corrections that needed to be made and the team fully committed to them," McCarton said.
St. John's also competed in the Division I Jazz division. Following a semi-final round of 25 teams, STJ advanced to the finals and took 13th.
