QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John’s dance team’s hard work paid off as it took third place in the Division I hip hop category at the 2014 Universal Dance Association (UDA) College Dance Team Championships this past weekend.
“I could not be more proud of this team,” said head coach Christine McCarton. “They have worked hard from day one and have always kept pushing themselves to get better. The team was ecstatic about their performance and even more when the results were announced.”
Following the conclusion of the semifinals on Saturday, St. John’s found themselves in fifth place with less than 24 hours to finalize their routine for the final round.
“After the semifinals we discussed what we needed to do to medal,” said McCarton. “We had a great practice that night and they hit the stage with incredible intensity in the finals on Sunday to move up to third place.”
The third-place finish marks the best finish for the Red Storm since taking second in 2011 and is the fourth consecutive year that St. John’s has placed in the top 10. Saint Joseph’s took home the title this year while Hofstra came in ahead of St. John’s for second.
