QUEENS, N.Y. - Perfectly demonstrating the outstanding character of Red Storm student-athletes both on the field and in the classroom, four St. John’s programs have been publicly recognized by the NCAA for having Academic Progress Rate (APR) score ranked inside the top-10 percent in their respective sport. The St. John’s women’s basketball, women’s golf and women’s tennis teams each recorded perfect APR scores, while the women’s track & field program also earned public recognition.
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams over the previous four seasons. Teams earning Public Recognition Awards increased to 1,284, up by 79 from the previous academic year, largely as a result of an increase in perfect scores. Of the teams recognized, 457 competed in men’s or mixed sports, and 827 competed in women’s sports. APRs for programs in the top-10 percent ranged from 985 to a perfect 1,000, and the number of teams posting perfect scores increased to 1,188, marking an increase of 98 teams from last year.
St. John’s women’s golf program registered a perfect APR score for the seventh-straight year, the longest such streak of any team at St. John’s. The squad also posted team titles at the Sacred Heart Invitational and the Benbow Invitational, as well as a fifth-place finish at the 2018 BIG EAST Women’s Golf Championship.
Joining the women’s golf team with perfect APR scores are the women’s basketball and women’s tennis programs, which are both earning the special recognition for the first time.
Having unprecedented success both on and off the playing field, the women’s basketball team reached the postseason for the 11th consecutive year and rattled off three-straight victories to reach the WNIT Quarterfinals for the first time in program history. The women’s tennis program also reached new heights this season, clinching the first BIG EAST title in team history and advancing to the NCAA Tournament to face No. 15 seed Stanford.
The St. John’s indoor and outdoor track and field squad was also honored by the NCAA for a 998 APR score to place inside the top-10 percent for special recognition. In addition to the prowess in the classroom, the Johnnies also captured a 2018 Metropolitan Outdoor title, a third-place finish at the 2017 BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championships, and a fourth-place mark at the 2018 BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships just this past weekend. The program was also awarded the St. John’s Community Service Award at the Athletic Department’s annual awards banquet in April.
In addition to these four programs, five other St. John’s teams outperformed the national average for their sport as baseball (980), men’s tennis (992), women’s cross country (995), women’s fencing (991), and softball (996) all posted impressive marks.
The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport.
