St. John's Presents Day Of Orientation For New Student-Athletes
Aug. 30, 2010 QUEENS, N.Y. - The 2010-11 St. John's athletic season opened for the Red Storm with the annual new student-athlete orientation on Monday, Aug. 30. The St. John's first-year and transfer student-athletes were welcomed by Director of Athletics Chris Monasch and the staff of Student Development. “St. John’s Student-Athlete Orientation introduces the Red Storm newcomers to the team of administrators, advisors and peer mentors who will help them during their college careers,” said Monasch. “We expect our student-athletes to strive for excellence as athletes, students and active participants in community service. Orientation lets our student-athletes know about the many tools and support services St. John’s provides for them to be successful.” The event was a day-long orientation for incoming freshman and transfer student-athletes. Returning Red Storm players served as group leaders, providing instruction and sharing advice for new student-athletes as they transition to campus life at St. John’s. During the day, the student-athletes participated in different sessions covering a variety of topics and met with their team's athletic academic advisor, campus minister and sports psychology consultant. "Our student-athletes have always been successful in the classroom and this day of orientation helps build the foundation for that success," said Eric Rienecker, Director of Academic Support for Student-Athletes. "The day gives these first-year and transfer students an opportunity to interact with student-athletes from other teams, hear from various leaders on campus, and build relationships that will last a lifetime." The day concluded with "Tailgate '10," an event open to all students offering free food and music in the Carnesecca Plaza. The event was co-sponsored by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Greek Life, Student Government Inc., RedZone School Spirit Committee, and Campus Activities. Performances by the Red Storm cheerleaders and stations encouraging students to sign up for season tickets to the various St. John's sports promoted excitement for the upcoming athletic seasons. |
