QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John’s community welcomed new students to campus on Tuesday with New Student Convocation in Carnesecca Arena followed by the annual St. John's Fest on the Great Lawn.

St. John’s head men’s basketball coach Steve Lavin addressed the new students, sharing insights from his own experiences and reminding them that their years at the University will help shape their futures.

“From these years here at St. John’s you will acquire the lessons and the tools you will need to be successful in your future,” Lavin said.

Lavin, along with Provost Julia A. Upton, RSM, Ph. D. and many of the University’s deans and faculty members, encouraged the new students to take advantage of the many opportunities that St. John’s provides for them as they begin their journey through college.

Following convocation, new students headed over to the Great Lawn and Red Storm student-athletes formed a welcome line to greet their new classmates. Students enjoyed free food, volleyball, inflatable amusements, video games and a live band during a sunny day on the Great Lawn.

“The welcome I’ve had here at St. John’s over the past few days has been great,” said freshman softball player Ashley Beza. “You really get a sense of the community and St. John’s family.”

The St. John’s President’s Society, which includes lacrosse player Dan Cremens, women’s soccer player Raelynne Lee and softball player Linzee Sumrall, attended both events and lended a helping hand in introducing new students to the University.

“It’s always nice to welcome new students to the St. John’s community,” Cremens said. “We’ve met some of the new student-athletes as well and we want to show them the high level of expectations that we value here at St. John’s.”
