Senior Assistant Director of Athletic Communications
Andrew O'Connell is in his fourth year at St. John's in 2017-18, serving as the primary contact for the Red Storm men's soccer and baseball programs. He is also the secondary contact for the St. John's men's basketball team.
During his first two years at the University, O'Connell served as the contact for the St. John's women's basketball and women's soccer programs before being elevated to the position of Senior Assistant Director of Athletic Communications in September of 2016.
O'Connell came to Queens following two years at his alma mater, Fordham University, where he served as the assistant sports information director responsible for women's basketball, softball, volleyball and golf. In those two years, O'Connell traveled to three separate NCAA Tournaments with the Rams, as the softball team took home a pair of Atlantic 10 titles and the women's basketball squad won the program's first-ever A-10 crown in 2013-14.
In addition to his role at the University, O'Connell also serves as a part-time member of the game night staff for the Madison Square Garden Sports Properties division, for whom he has worked several NITs, BIG EAST Tournaments, NCAA Regional Finals and championship boxing events.
A native of Elmont, N.Y., O'Connell graduated summa cum laude from Fordham University in 2012 with a bachelor's degree in American Studies. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, O'Connell was one of only 18 members in his class inducted into this prestigious honors society as a junior.
O'Connell has deep New York basketball roots in his family. His father, Jim, is a St. John's alum and has been the National College Basketball Writer for the Associated Press since 1978. His mother, Anne, scored 2,548 points and grabbed 1,999 boards during her four-year playing career at Fordham, where she was the first female inductee into the the school's athletic hall of fame and still holds the crown as the school's career leader in scoring and rebounding.
O'Connell currently resides in Farmingdale, N.Y.
