The Captain's Corner features insights from each of the St.
John's baseball team's three senior co-captains - second baseman
Sam DeLuca, outfielder
Chris Joachim and catcher
Brendan Monaghan. In the seventh installment of a weekly series
on RedStormSports.com, Monaghan blogs about this weekend's and last
weekend's BIG EAST Conference series and in what ways the team has
improved since the start of the year.
BIG EAST Series Win Over Rutgers:
Going into every BIG EAST series our objective is to win two out of
the three games and we were able to accomplish that this past
weekend. It was tough dropping the third game, but from a
series perspective we accomplished our goal and finished the week
4-1 after the two midweek wins against Columbia and Wagner … Offense Heats Up: I think our lineup is
starting to finally set itself up the way we had hoped and
everybody is starting to feel comfortable and understand their role
in the lineup. Our team has also been getting deeper with a lot of
guys seeing some action recently, so our bench will have the
ability to contribute just as much as the starters … Pitchers Making Strides: The pitching staff
has definitely improved each week and significantly from the start
of the season back when we were struggling. Coach [Scott] Brown and
the pitchers have recommitted themselves to getting back to the
things that make us successful. We are focusing even more now
on getting ahead of hitand keeping the top hitters from hurting us
… In The Public Eye: It is always nice
to have a story written about yourself especially in a paper with
the scope of the Daily News. What makes it even
better is that it allows the whole team to be recognized throughout
New York City and shows people how well our team as a whole is
doing … Looking Ahead To Villanova: We
have a big three game series against Villanova this weekend and
just like every BIG EAST series, anything can happen. On a given
weekend, anybody can win, and with the conference as tight as it is
right now, a series win or sweep could significantly move teams up
or down.
