The Captain's Corner features insights from each of the St.
John's baseball team's three senior co-captains - second baseman
Sam DeLuca, infielder/outfielder
Chris Joachim and catcher
Brendan Monaghan. In the ninth installment of a weekly series
on RedStormSports.com, DeLuca blogs about the team's recent hot
stretch, a game-winning home run by
Chris Anninos and
Scott Barnes' no-hitter against Georgetown.
Offense Among BIG EAST's Best: Our
lineup from top to bottom is extremely deep. From 1-to-9, we
will give any pitcher a tough at-bat. Over the last couple of
weeks, guys have started to step up, and we really have put it
together offensively ... Barnes'
No-Hitter: Scott's no-hitter was unbelievable. He has
amazing stuff and really had everything working that night. He has
started to pitch the way I know he can over his last few starts and
will be a key part of this team's success down the road ... Sweeping Georgetown: Every game in this
conference is a tough one, and sweeping a series on the road is
huge for our team's confidence. If we don't come ready to play
every game and bring that fire and intensity that is needed to win
in the BIG EAST, it would be very difficult to win consistently ...
Anninos' Game-Winning Homer: Chris
came up huge for the team on Sunday with his home run. It was an
amazing way to win a game and finish off a great series ... Watching The League Standings: My thoughts
on the BIG EAST standings are that we need to keep winning and
worry about ourselves. It doesn't do any good to watch other teams
and pay attention to things that are out of our control ... Patience A Virtue: This season I've tried to
be more selective at the plate, trust my eye and take walks when
they're given to me. I've been more patient and have really worked
hard on not getting myself out and giving at bats away … This Weekend: Anytime we go on the road in
conference play our goal is to win the series. West Virginia is a
tough place to play and we need to take one game at a time and
carry our momentum from this past weekend into the series.
