MIDLAND, Texas

the top of the 14th inning to lift the Patriots (4-2) to a 10-9 win
over St. John's (0-1) at the Midland College Classic on Saturday.
Sam DeLuca had three hits for the Red Storm, including a
leadoff triple and game-tying run in the bottom of the ninth
inning, and seniors

Anthony Smith each homered in the loss.
St. John's completes a doubleheader at 6:45 p.m. (EST) with
the first of two games against Texas Tech. The Red Storm and Red
Raiders will conclude the College Classic with a 3 p.m.
(EST) contest on Sunday.
Smith went 2-for-6 with a home run and four RBI for St. John's,
and Mahoney hit a two-run homer and scored two runs. Senior catcher
Brendan Monaghan hit an RBI double and a sacrifice fly, and
freshman
Brian Kemp drove in a run and scored a run in his St. John's
debut.
Sophomore
Justin Gutsie entered the game in the top of the eighth inning
and helped extend it with five scoreless innings of relief and
eight strikeouts. Freshman
B.J. Martin relieved Gutsie in the 14th and picked up the loss
after allowing one hit and one run in an inning of work.
The big left-handed bats of Smith and Mahoney staked the Red
Storm to a 5-0 lead with home runs in the bottom of the first
inning. Smith connected with a line drive down the right field line
to score Kemp and
Chris Joachim, who both reached on infield singles. Monaghan
drew a two-out walk to keep the inning alive, and Mahoney launched
a 2-0 offering from Jordan Meaker well over the wall in right
field.
Dallas Baptist scored its first two runs in the top of the third
and went on to score runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to
come all the way back and take an 8-7 lead. The Patriots would tack
on another run on a Garrett Baker RBI single in the eighth to give
DBU a late 9-7 lead.
The Red Storm chipped away in the bottom half of the inning, as
Mahoney (walk) and Grantham (single) reached to start the frame.
Gino Matias dropped down a sacrifice bunt to put both runners
in scoring position, and Kemp drove in Mahoney with an RBI
groundout.
DeLuca tripled to lead off the ninth and scored the game-tying
run on a sacrifice fly to left field by Smith. Gutsie and Dallas
Baptist reliever Victor Black put up scoreless innings through the
14th, when the Patriots broke through on Knight's RBI double. Black
finished the game with a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his
first career victory.
