QUEENS, N.Y. -
The Red Storm men's and women's basketball teams gave more than 1,000 screaming Red Storm fans a free preview of the seasons ahead as St. John's hosted its 2005-06 Basketball Tip-Off Event. The night featured a three-point contest with men's head coach Norm Roberts, a free throw contest with women's coach Kim Barnes Arico, men's and women's scrimmages and opportunities for three fans to win $25,000.
Coach Roberts cruised to victory in the three-point shooting contest, knocking down 11 of his 12 shots, and Coach Barnes Arico worked her way to a win in the free throw shooting contest, despite using the larger men's basketball. Fans competed for the right to shoot against the two head coaches, and, later in the night, three lucky fans competed in a trivia contest for the right to shoot for $25,000. None of the three were able to convert the four shots - a layup, free throw, three-pointer and half-court shot - in 25 seconds to win the prize.
The Red Storm women got the scrimmage portion of the night started, with the White team beating the Red 11-10 in the 10-minute intra-squad game. Junior forward Angela Clark (Copiague, N.Y.) was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field to lead the winning White squad with game-highs of eight points and six rebounds. Sophomore forward Tiina Sten (Turku, Finland) was active in the paint, grabbing four offensive rebounds in 10 minutes, and freshman Lisa Claxton (Hempstead, N.Y.) showed her range by knocking down a long three-pointer to cap the White team's scoring.
Senior Danielle Chambers (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led a balanced Red team attack with four points and two rebounds, and freshman Angel Tate (Birmingham, Ala.) chipped in with two points and three boards.
In the men's scrimmage, the White team made it a clean sweep by beating the Red squad 27-19 in a 20-minute game. Freshman big man Tomas Jasiulionis (Richmond, Va.) went a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the line in scoring a game-high eight points, and preseason All-BIG EAST selection Daryll Hill (Queens, N.Y.) dazzled fans by getting in the paint and dishing out a game-high three assists. Eugene Lawrence (Brooklyn, N.Y.) showed an improved jump shot and scored a Red team-high five points, and Lamont Hamilton (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored two points and grabbed three boards.
Both teams start preseason play with exhibition games in mid-November, with the women's team taking on Team Concept on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. and the men taking on Queens College on Monday, Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. Both games will be played at Carnesecca Arena.
