Strength and Conditioning Coach
Springfield ‘00
3rd Season At St. John’s
Jeff Smith is in his third season as the Director of Strength
and Conditioning for St. John’s men’s and women’s basketball. Smith
is responsible for the design and implementation of
basketball-specific training programs for St. John’s
student-athletes.
Smith works with the Red Storm basketball players in the
preseason and throughout the year to improve each athlete’s level
of performance and reduce the risk of injury. He works with the St.
John’s coaching staff to implement a training program that
emphasizes strength, speed, flexibility and conditioning, enabling
the Red Storm to play an up-tempo style of basketball.
Recently, Smith was commissioned to oversee the design for
the Red Storm’s newly-opened weight training facility in the
state-of-the-art Taffner Field House. The weight room is equipped
with free weights, cardiovascular training equipment and resistance
machines, all emblazoned with St. John’s basketball logos.
Smith also serves as the coordinator of the Athlete’s Training
Table, designing comprehensive nutrition programs for the
basketball teams, both at home and on the road.
Smith came to St. John’s from Iona College, where he served as
Director of Strength and Conditioning and oversaw 19 sports. Prior
to his time at Iona, Smith was a strength and conditioning coach at
Florida State University, where he worked with the nationally
ranked Seminole football team.
Smith received both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from
Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. He is certified through
the National Strength and Conditioning Association (CSCS), the
