The Red Storm gains vaulable
experience.
The St. John's lacrosse team took part in Price Modern's
Lacrosse For Leukemia Tournament at the St. Paul's School in
Baltimore, Md., Saturday. The one-day tournament helped raise money
for leukemia research.
The Red Storm played against Albany and Villanova. The Great
Danes have won the America East Conference (AEC) championship the
past three years and have also earned berths to the NCAA
tournament. Meanwhile, the Wildcats made the semifinals of the
Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament in 2003, 2005, and
in 2004 made the finals of the CAA.
During the tournament, each team was represented by a child
suffering from leukemia. For St. John's, it was a 12-year old girl
named Erin. Overall, the one day tournament raised $86,000.
"It was a great day and a great experience playing for a really
good cause," said head coach
Rick Sowell. "We're a two-year program that was able to play
toe-to-toe with two very good teams. Plus, the freshmen learned
what it was like to play at the collegiate level and overall we
walked away a better program. We're looking forward to getting back
on the field this weekend."
The Red Storm is back in action this Sunday to close out its
fall schedule. St John's plays for the Algonquin Cup at Hofstra
University in Hempstead, N.Y. The Red Storm received a bye in the
first round of the six-team, single-day tournament, and collides in
the semifinals with the winner of the Hofstra vs. Cornell match up.
The semifinal contest begins at 11:30 a.m.
If St. John's wins, it will meet the winner of the Stony Book
vs. Duke/Hobart contest for the championship at James M. Stuart
Stadium at 3 p.m. If the Red Storm falls in the semifinals, the
team will play in the consolation match at 1 p.m. against the loser
of the Stony Brook vs. Duke/Hobart game.
