Red Storm Lacrosse Charges Past Robert Morris, 12-3, In Season Opener

The St. John's lacrosse team opened its season on a winning note, dominating Robert Morris, 12-3, at the St. Paul's School in Baltimore, Md., Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Tom Michaelsen (Bethpage, N.Y.) led the Red Storm attack with three goals and three assists while sophomore goalie Dave Saccente (Lake Grove, N.Y.) recorded five saves in the win.

After the Colonials (1-1) put the first goal on the scoreboard just under three minutes into the contest, the Red Storm responded two minutes later when Michelsen found freshman Thomas Manes (Philadelphia, Pa.) tying the game at one goal a piece.

Michelsen broke the tie almost three minutes later with an unassisted goal to make the score 2-1. St. John's went on to record four more goals before the end of the first quarter, including freshman Dominick Denapoli's (Hewlett, N.Y.) goal when he fired the ball into the cage as the clock expired to end the period.

The Red Storm scored two more times to cap the eight goal rally and never looked back. Sophomores Graeme Gillespie (Ithaca, N.Y), Jack Rosson (Severna Park, MD.) and Justin O'Donnell (Levittown, N.Y.) each scored a goal in the rally. Rosson had two goals on the day while O'Donnell had two goals and an assist.

St. John's dominated the Colonials on both offense and defense. The Red Storm took 41 shots in the contest, 26 on goal, allowing Robert Morris to take 15 shots, just eight on goal. St. John's also picked up 32 groundballs while the Colonials collected 15.

Sophomore Devin Madden (Kensington, MD.) controlled the action at the face-off circle, winning 11 of 15 while Rosson won 2 of 3 from the X.

Also contributing to the Red Storm's offensive efforts was sophomore Rob Gannon (Port Washington, N.Y.), who recorded two goals and one assist while sophomore Felix Forbes (Corning, N.Y.) and freshman Jamal Jones (Severn, MD.) each picked up an assist.

St. John's is back in action next Saturday, March 4 for the ECAC Lacrosse League opener. The Red Storm travels to the nation's capital to collide with the Hoyas of Georgetown. Face-off is schedule for 1 p.m. St. John's home opener is the following Saturday, March 11 at 1 p.m. against Drexel.
