The St. John's lacrosse team dropped its home opener to Drexel,
12-6, at DaSilva Memorial Field Saturday. The Red Storm falls to
1-2 on the season, while the Dragons move up to 4-1.
The Dragons started the game with a 3-0 run in the first
quarter, which sophomore Steve Grossi scored twice. The Red Storm
responded at the end of the first and in the second to tie the
score at three. Freshman
Thomas Manes (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored two of the goals while
sophomore
Justin O'Donnell (Levittown, N.Y.) picked up the other.
Four different Drexel players netted four more goals to make the
score 7-3 with 12 minutes to go in the third. But in that period,
St. John's was able to cut the lead to three twice, once at the
12:30 mark (7-4) and also at the end of the quarter (9-6). Scoring
for St. John's was sophomore
Jack Rosson (Severna Park, Md.), who scored twice, as well as
sophomore
Tom Michaelsen (Bethpage, N.Y).
The Red Storm would not get any closer than three. The Dragons
found the back of the cage four more times in the final quarter to
seal the victory. Drexel's Jeff Pfeffer picked up his fourth goal
in the quarter while Matt Musci recorded his third point of the
game with an assist.
Drexel goalie Bruce Bickford stopped 16 Red Storm shots, while
sophomore goalkeeper
Dave Saccente (Lake Grove, N.Y.) stopped 15 of the Dragons'
shots.
Drexel led St. John's in most categories, recording 36 shots to
the Red Storm's 33, as well as taking 13 of 22 from the faceoff
circle. St. John's did win the groundball battle, 26-24.
The Red Storm returns to action Wednesday, March 15 in West
Hartford, Conn. when the team collides with Hartford. Last year,
St. John's defeated the Hawks, 9-4, at home.
