LEWISBURG, Pa.
Amidst the snow and ice piled up around the field
turf at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium, the St. John’s men’s
lacrosse team dropped its season opener 10-4 to the Bucknell
Bison.
The Red Storm got on the board first as Felix
Forbes (Corning East, N.Y.) passed the ball off to Justin O’Donnell (Levittown, N.Y.) from the
left side, who found the back of the net behind first-year goalie,
sophomore Matt Antonelli at 13:28 on the clock.
Four minutes later, the Bison tied the game up at 1-1 as
freshman Austin Winter scored his first collegiate goal unassisted
on Red Storm goalie Dave Saccente
(Lake Grove, N.Y.). The Bison cleared the ball down the field and
Winter brought the ball around the goal before sending the ball to
the back of the net.
Winter helped give the Bison the lead 40 seconds later as he passed
the ball from behind the goal to fellow freshman Tim Brandau who
made a quick diving shot into the net.
Bucknell scored once more in the first quarter, as sophomore John
Togneri’s pass intended for sophomore Joe Mele bounced into the Red
Storm’s goal.
The Bison went up 6-1 in the second quarter before junior Graeme Gillespie (Ithaca, N.Y.) scored on a
pass from sophomore Tom Manes
(Philadelphia, Pa.). After winning his second face-off of the game,
sophomore Dom DeNapoli (Hewlett, N.Y.)
passed the ball off to the Red Storm attack, who made good on the
quick two pass offense.
With 3:09 left in the first half, the Red Storm lagged behind the
Bison 6-2.
In the third, St. John’s scored with five minutes left as sophomore
Drew Schanen (North Brunswick)
capitalized on a man-up opportunity with a left-sided up-field pass
from junior Jack Rosson (Severna
Park), bringing the score up to 7-3.

Marks, (unassisted at 8:59, 7-2), Mele (from Winter at 4:06, 8-3),
