LOUISVILLE, Ky.

Sophomore Bobby Fitton (Oak Hill, Va.) and junior Trevor Michaelsen (Bethpage, N.Y.) combined for nine points as the St. John’s men’s lacrosse team fell just short of their first win at Bellarmine, Saturday afternoon.

Michaelsen’s goals were his first in his collegiate career as he sat on the sidelines for the past two years, once as a medical redshirt and once due to NCAA transfer regulations.

Bellarmine continued their undefeated run in home openers (3-0), scoring a dramatic 12-11 victory as junior Ray Finnegan netted the game winner with just two minutes left in the game.

With the loss, the Red Storm falls to 0-2 on the season and the Knights even their record at 1-1.

The Red Storm led 10-8 late in the third, before Bellarmine rallied back with a late second goal by Justin Norbraten.

The Knights then scored twice to open the fourth creating a 11-10 Bellarmine lead, with 11:41 left in regulation.

St. John’s scored an equalizer at the nine minute mark when as a Bellarmine attacker sent a pass too high and the ball rolled out to midfield. From there, Fitton scooped up the loose ball and rushed all the way to the cage to deposit the game-tying goal. The score remained deadlocked until the final two minutes.

Fitton finished the game with four goals, Michaelsen also added four goals and one assist, his brother Tom Michaelsen (Bethpage, N.Y.) also netted a goal and added three assists for four points. Also scoring for the Red Storm was junior Felix Forbes (Corning East, N.Y.) with one goal and one assist and junior Jack Rosson (Serverna Park, Md.) with one goal.

Rosson led the Red Storm in face-offs, going 8-16.

The Red Storm out cleared and outshot the Knights, going 20-22 in clear attempts, with 33 shots while the Knights went 18-25 in clears and added 32 shots.

Red Storm goalkeeper Dave Saccente (Lake Grove, N.Y.) marked nine saves while Bellarmine keeper J.C. Hutchens had 12 saves on the day.

Next up, the Red Storm will face nationally ranked Georgetown University in their season home-opener and ECAC Lacrosse League opener. Face off is scheduled for 1 p.m. on March 3.
