QUEENS, N.Y.
The Red Storm scored their second win of the season with a 9-8
victory over the Bobcats of Quinnipiac Tuesday afternoon at DaSilva
Memorial Field, led by double hat tricks for the Michaelsen
twins.
With the win, the Red Storm advances to 2-4 on the season while
the Bobcats even up their record at 2-2.
For the game, the Michaelsen twins combined for eight points
(six goals, two assists), their best tandem performance yet this
season. For the set of brothers, the hat tricks are each their
second for the season.
Sophomore Tom Manes started the Red
Storm on the right foot as he scored within the first two minutes
of play. Junior Tom Michaelsen
followed soon after with his first of three goals past Bobcat
goalie, Roger Fish.
Not to be outdone by his brother, junior Trevor Michaelsen came down the field a
minute later to put another past Fish.
Tom Michaelsen netted another one-timer into the net after a
clear attempt by the Bobcats failed.
The Red Storm’s four goal run gave St. John’s the safety net
they needed before the Bobcats came back with three unanswered
goals of their own in the last two minutes of the first period and
the opening two minutes of the second.
Marking his eighth goal of the season, Tom
Michaelsen teamed up with Graeme
Gillsepie to widen the gap to two with 10:43 to go in the
half. Junior Justin O’Donnell followed
with a goal aided by Felix Forbes.
Fed by Tucker Prudden, Quinnipiac’s Todd Kaiser put one past Red
Storm goaltender Dan Goldberg to
tighten the gap to 6-4.
With 9:19 to go in the game, and a three-goal streak in the last
four minutes to open the fourth, the Red Storm seemed to have had
it in the bag with a 9-5 lead over Quinnipiac of the Great Western
Lacrosse League.
However, Mike Stottler, who leads the Bobcats in scoring with
eight goals, scored unassisted with 6:50 left, making it a
three-goal game again. Chris Griffin and Prudden scored
back-to-back goals in the last 59 seconds of play.
Quinnipiac was ready to tie it up as Griffin took advantage of a
Red Storm turnover to get a point-blank shot off with 10 seconds
left. Goldberg stepped it up and dodged the bullet as he muffed
Griffin’s shot to the right. The Bobcats picked up the ground ball
as the clock ran out on their come-back opportunity.
Junior Jack Rosson made a
tremendous improvement from Saturday’s game against Drexel as he
dominated Quinnipiac at the face-off X. Rosson won 12-18 face-offs
helping the Red Storm gain the offensive after each goal. Dom DeNapoli also helped the Red Storm with
a 2-3 record at the X.
The Red Storm was back on its clearing game, successful on 22-24
attempts. Quinnipiac went 15-18.
Goldberg marked another double-digit performance in goal for the
Red Storm with 17 saves. For the Bobcats, Fish matched a
career-high of 14 saves.
Scoring for the Red Storm were the Michaelsen twins with three
goals each and two assists for Tom Michaelsen. Manes, O’Donnell and
Bobby Fitton each marked one goal
each, while Gillespie, Forbes, Manes and O’Donnell each had an
assist.
The St. John’s Red Storm is back in action on Saturday, March 17
as they travel to Baltimore to take on the No. 14 Loyola
Greyhounds. Face-off is slated for 1 p.m. in the Red Storm’s second
league contest of the season.
