A three goal rally late in the third quarter put St. John’s within three, but not enough to stop the No. 14 Loyola Greyhounds as they defeated the Red Storm 12-6 Saturday afternoon at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field.

With the loss, the Red Storm falls to 2-5 on the season and 0-2 in the league. The No. 14 Loyola Greyhounds advance to 3-2 on the season and 2-0 in ECAC play.

Greyhound Senior Dan Bauers started the day off with two goals in the first quarter putting before Red Storm junior Tom Michaelsen scored on ECAC defensive player of the week Alex Peaty to close the opening period.

Bauers sent two more past sophomore goaltender Dan Goldberg to put the Greyhounds up 4-1 six minutes into the second. Trevor Michaelsen answered back with an unassisted goal to bring the Red Storm within two.

A goal by junior Jack Rosson would bring the Red Storm within two goals with 15 seconds to go in the half after Loyola sent another past Goldberg.

This is the third time the Red Storm would hold a ranked team to just a two goal lead going into the second half (4-2, vs, Georgetown on March 3 and 3-2 vs. Bucknell on Feb. 18).

Going into the third quarter down 5-3, the Greyhounds sent in four unanswered goals before the Red Storm picked it up with a three-goal rally of their own started by Tom Manes with an unassisted goal, his third goal for the season, with four minutes to go in the third. Manes’ goal was followed by Trevor Michaelsen fed by his twin brother Tom and backed up by an unassisted goal from Justin O’Donnell to put the Red Storm within three going into the fourth.

In the fourth, the Greyhounds pulled away with a four-goal rally to end the league contest at 12-6.

Bauers ended with a six-goal career-high for the Greyhounds.

The Greyhounds took advantage of Red Storm penalties to score three goals on man-up opportunities.

Goldberg marked nine saves in the outing. The Red Storm outshot the Greyhounds 32-30, but Peaty made 12 saves to keep the Greyhounds with the point advantage.

Up next, the Red Storm will continue on their two-game away stint to play the Saints of Siena in Loudonville, N.Y. on Wednesday, March 21. Face-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Siena Field.
