AMHERST, Mass.
St. John’s was defeated 11-7 by University of Massachusetts,
Saturday afternoon on Garber Field.
With the loss, the Red Storm falls to 4-6 on the season and 1-3
in the ECAC, while the Minutemen advance to 4-5, 2-1 in the
ECAC.
At the half St. John’s led 6-3, going into the locker room fresh
off a four goal scoring streak.
UMass got on the board first with a goal by Rory Pedrick.
Picking up a groundball rebound, sophomore Tom Manes, who had three assists in the win
against Rutgers, sent the ball into the past Doc Schneider tying
the game at one.

junior Trevor Michaelsen wide open
from behind the net as Michaelsen one-timed the ball into the goal
to give the Red Storm its first lead of the game, 2-1.
UMass tied the game at 2-2 with a goal by Brett Garber with just
over a minute to play in the first. Junior defender Chris DeMarco cleared the ball into the
Minutemen zone and took a diving shot to try to go ahead in the
waning seconds of the period.
With just over three minutes to play in the second, the Red
Storm opened the gap as Manes fed junior Justin O’Donnell the ball to score with 3:13
to go in the half.
Thirty-seven seconds later, Manes, unassisted, scored his second
goal of the game, advancing the score to 4-3.
Winning the following face-off, midfielder Jack Rosson picked groundball off the draw,
circled the crease and scored on Scheider, this week’s ECAC
Co-Defender of the Week.
Giving Rosson a break from the face-off X, Dom DeNapoli won the next draw and got the
ball to Tom Michaelsen who sent the
ball into the back of the net with an over the shoulder shot,
unassisted with 1:41 left in the half.
The Minutemen came back in the third period, with a five goal
streak of their own as Jim Connolly sent in three back-to-back
goals to give UMass a two goal lead, 8-6.
O’Donnell brought the game within one with 3:33 to go in the
third as he sent in his second goal of the game
With his third goal of the game, Garber put UMass up 9-7 to end
the period.
In the fourth quarter UMass scored twice more advancing the
score to 11-7.
Up next, the Red Storm is on the road again as the team travels
to Penn State to face-off against the Nittany Lions. Face-off is
scheduled for 1 p.m. on April 14.
