Coming back from a three-goal deficit after a scoreless first period, the Red Storm got on the board five minutes into the second as junior Tom Michaelsen fed the ball to junior Justin O’Donnell who got the first of the day past Penn State goaltender Drew Adams.

Two possessions later, St. John’s would bring the score within one as Trevor Michaelsen took advantage of a man-up situation, scoring with eight seconds left in the penalty, to advance the score to 3-2 with 5:22 left in the half. The assist was credited to Tom Michaelsen.

Penn State quickly answered back as Andrew Mackrides sent one past Red Storm goaltender Dave Saccente to bring the score to 4-2.

The Nittany Lions put one more on the board with 3:43 left to play in the half.

With seconds dwindling in the second period, junior defender Tim LaMare picked up a ground ball and cleared the ball to the Red Storm attack zone. Tom Michaelsen scooped up the pass and fed the ball to sophomore Matt Viscusi who put the ball in the back of the net as the horn blew for a last second goal opportunity. Viscusi’s goal was his second of the year, fourth of his career.

With 15 shots in the second period, St. John’s almost evened the shot count as Penn State had 22 shots in the first half and St. John’s had 21.

Junior Jack Rosson won the second half opening face-off giving the Red Storm its first possession and goal opportunity of the third quarter. Dom DeNapoli picked up the ground ball off the face-off putting the ball in the Nittany Lions zone. Sophomore Tom Manes fed the ball to junior attackman Graeme Gillsepie who got the fourth Red Storm goal past Adams, advancing the score to 5-4.

Gil Pearsall gave the Nittany Lions another goal to put them up 6-4 before the team of Manes and Gillespie scored once more for the Red Storm with just over one minute to play in the third period.

A last second goal by the Nittany Lions advanced them to 7-5 to end the third quarter.

Penn State opened the fourth with another goal, making the score 8-5. The Red Storm was only to get off four shots in the fourth quarter as the Lions took advantage of the clock and did their best to keep possession of the ball. Penn State scored once more at 4:14 to make the final score 9-5.

Saccente has 12 saves for the Red Storm with nine goals allowed. Adams had 14 saves and five goals allowed for the Nittany Lions.
