TAMPA, Fla.
The St. John’s men’s tennis team fell, 4-0, in a hard-fought
contest against USF Sunday morning to finish in fourth place
overall at the BIG EAST Championships in Tampa, Fla. The Red Storm
concludes the season with a 13-9 record on the season.
St. John’s battled USF through the doubles point. The Bulls won
at the No. 3 spot as Marc Jaeger and Ales Svigelj overpowered Artem
Vlasenko and Claudio
Halim, 8-1. The Red Storm evened the score as Louis
Desmarteaux and Martin
Kosut rallied back to defeated Daniel Daudt and Henning Hipp,
8-6, at second doubles. However, the Bulls earned the one-point
lead with a victory at the No. 1 spot. Mahmoud Hamed and Thomas
Estrada beat Alex
Svetlakov and Tom Green,
8-5.
The match was called once again before St. John’s could register
a win in singles action. USF posted triumphs as the No. 3, No. 4
and No. 5 spots; with Hamed defeating Svetlakov (6-2, 6-2) at third
singles to secure the team victory for the Bulls.
At the conclusion of the match, senior captain Desmarteaux was
leading his No. 1 singles contest against Svigelj (6-4, 4-3 DNF),
while freshman Derek
Wallensteen and sophomore Vlasenko were winning in the second
set of their respective matches after losing the first set to
USF.
