March 22, 2017
As I write this entry, March Madness is underway and this is an opportunity to reflect on the accomplishments of the St. John's basketball programs while the 2016-17 campaign is fresh in our memories.
The Red Storm men's basketball team continued to show improvement with its young and talented roster as the season progressed. There were several highlights throughout the year, including the program's third-straight victory over longtime rival Syracuse, an upset over the nationally ranked Butler Bulldogs who are competing in the Sweet Sixteen this weekend, and a BIG EAST Tournament win over archrival Georgetown.
On the women's side, Head Coach Joe Tartamella has guided our program to its 10th-straight postseason appearance with a berth in the WNIT. The Red Storm has advanced to the WNIT Round of 16 and will take on Michigan this Thursday night in Ann Arbor. For the fourth-consecutive year, the program has reached the 20-win mark, and two of those victories came over eventual BIG EAST champion Marquette.
At the end of the month, I will be traveling to Phoenix to join many St. John's alumni and fans for a Final Four Watch Party to give our Red Storm faithful a taste of the experience. Although the Johnnies will not be participating this season, we are confident that with continued progress and support our teams can reach the pinnacle of March Madness.
Recently, our Athletic Development Office conducted a benchmark comparison with our BIG EAST counterparts and learned we are in the middle of our conference in fundraising. However, we believe we can rise to the top of the league in terms of fundraising and achieve successes in this area that other programs will try to emulate.
In order to do so, we need your support. Our student-athletes need you. Every gift counts.
We must rally together to support St. John's Athletics. Please tell your classmates, family and friends to join the Red White Club by donating today. It is easy to do. Just visit https://athleticsgiving.stjohns.edu/ to make a gift.
In order to compete for BIG EAST and national championships, we must provide our student-athletes with cutting-edge equipment and facilities to hone their skills.
If you have any questions or would like more information on unique giving opportunities, please contact our Senior Director of Athletic Development, Nick Vendikos '91 SVC at email@example.com or at 718-990-6147.
We will be hitting the road soon and I hope to personally thank you for your support.
