2018 January North American Cup Results

QUEENS, N.Y. – Sending a myriad of current and former St. John’s fencers to the January North American Cup in Virginia Beach, Va., this past weekend, Red Storm alum and 2016 Rio Olympic silver medalist, Daryl Homer highlighted St. John’s results with a perfect 13-0 record to win gold in men’s saber.

With a 6-0 record in pool play, Homer earned a bye in the table of 256 and then cruised past his next three opponents, outscoring them by a total of 26 touches. In the table of 16, the Bronx, N.Y., native registered back-to-back, 15-12, victories to advance into the semifinals, before defeating Kaito Streets to earn a spot in the finals. Looking to take home the gold, Homer knocked off Jeff Spear, 15-10, to add another gold medal to his incredible fencing career.

Ben Natanzon, a junior from Manalapan, N.J., opened up the competition with an unblemished 10-0 record in men’s saber, but came up short in the table of eight to pick up a sixth-place finish. The 2017 men’s epee national champion, Cooper Schumacher came in fifth after also falling in the quarterfinals.

Freshman Ivan Zagoruiko impressed on the strip in men’s epee, coming in eighth place, while the veteran Curtis McDowald picked up a top 15 finish. Classmate Sean White performed solid on the piste with a 23rd place finish, while Red Storm alumni Adam Rodney and Benjamin Bratton came in 27th and 33rd, respectively.

Another newcomer in Sal Centanni tallied four triumphs in men’s saber to place in a tie for 53rd and in the junior saber draw, Centanni finished tied for 20th. Newcomer Dalton Walker registered five victories in pool play to earn a top 70 finish in junior saber. In the Div I men’s foil draw, Malcolm Jackson also won five bouts to place in the top 85 and placed 31st in the junior competition.

Former St. John’s national champion, Isis Washington registered a 27th place finish in women’s epee.
