McDowald Snags Two Bronze Medals at January North American Cup

QUEENS, N.Y. 
- St. John's  had 10 fencers compete in the January North American Cup held in St. Louis, Mo., this past weekend. Sophomore Curtis McDowald highlighted the Red Storm results, earning bronze medals in both Divison I men's epee and junior men's epee.

Sophomore Sean White did not disappoint after yet another stellar performance on the strip. The Virginia native tied with McDowald for third in junior men's epee to also earn a bronze medal. White also competed in Division I men's epee and finished 89th overall.

Freshman Ben Natanzon had the highest finish among St. John's participants as he finished second to take home the silver in the junior men's saber. He also finished in 26th place in the Division I men's saber.

Junior Cooper Schumacher continued his impressive year with his third top-10 finish coming in ninth in the Division I men's epee.


Sophomore Alex Cotter finished in 112th place in Division I men's epee and 125th place in junior men's epee. Freshman Hunter Williams-Burrows finished tied for 71st place in junior men's foil and tied for 168th in Division I men's foil.

On the women's side St. John's had four fencers compete led by sophomore Ally Ryf who finished 17th in Division I women's epee. Freshman Caitlin McKenna and Melissa Gillick also competed in Division I women's epee and finished 108th and 165th, respectively. McKenna and Gillick placed 75th and 106th in junior women's epee.

Freshman Kailyn Gillick was the lone St. John's representative in the junior women's saber and tied for 94th place.


NEXT UP

The January North American Cup was the fourth and final NAC in which St. John's will send representatives this season.

The Red Storm will compete as a team at two invitational cups during the week of Jan. 23-24 in Queens, N.Y.

On Saturday, Jan. 23, St. John's will host five elite programs (Columbia, Harvard, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State) during the St. John's Invitational Cup in Taffner Field House.

The Red Storm will then have a quick turnaround as they return to Taffner Field House Sunday along with co-host New York University for the SJU/NYU Invitational Cup. St. John's will take on Columbia, Notre Dame, NYU, Ohio State, Wayne State, and Yale.
