St. John's Competes in Prestigious Annual Home Fencing Invitational

QUEENS, N.Y. – Taking on five schools that all rank inside the top eight in the latest College Fencing 360 Coaches Poll, the Red Storm fencing team came away with one victory as the men’s side defeated Ohio State, 16-11, who rank No. 2 in the poll.

Both the men’s and the women’s team finished in sixth place, while the Harvard men’s fencing team won the title with a perfect 5-0 record and the Notre Dame women’s squad was a perfect 4-0 to win the invitational.

The women’s saber team topped the Johnnies with the most victories as the squad tallied 26 on the day behind 11 from sophomore Karolina Cieslar. Karolina Kaleta added nine triumphs and the newcomer Justine Pascual rounded out the trio with six wins of her own.

On the men’s side, the epee squad tacked on 25 victories using an assortment of five different fencers. The veteran Sean White was outstanding all afternoon with a team-best 12-3 record, while Ivan Zagoruiko and Curtis McDowald combined for 13 triumphs. In men’s foil, the defending national champion Andras Nemeth added nine wins and freshman Vincent Mindelof also picked up nine bout victories.

The seniors Ally Ryf and Veronika Zuikova  performed solid on the piste as the duo both reached double-digits in wins with 11 and 10, respectively. Ben Natanzon, who went up against fierce competition finished 9-6 in men’s saber and rookies Ferjani Fares and Dalton Walker combined for 13 victories.


The Johnnies will return to the piste tomorrow for the UPenn Invitational, held at the TSE Center in Philadelphia.
