QUEENS, N.Y. – After the men’s fencing squad won the St. John’s Fencing Invitational yesterday, the men’s and women’s team hit the strip again today at the NYU Invitational (hosted by Columbia) and each team recorded two victories for a combined record of 4-4 on Sunday afternoon.

Each squad registered victories over Wayne State and NYU, while both squads fell short to top-ranked Columbia and Notre Dame, who also ranks in the top four in the latest CollegeFencing360 Coaches Poll.

Leading all Red Storm fencers was Ally Ryf at the NYU Invitational, as she was incredible on the strip with an 11-1 record. The women’s epee team recorded a team-best 25 wins with Melissa Gillick going a perfect 5-0 on the piste, while Veronika Zuikova and Olivia Xu combined for nine wins to round out the squad.

The men’s saber squad enjoyed a solid day on the strip with a 21-15 record with Ben Natanzon picking up 10 wins and just two losses on the afternoon. The saber team defeated Notre Dame, 6-3 as Natanzon and Ferenc Valkai each tallied three wins and the graduate student from Hungary, Valkai, went 9-3 on the day.

The men’s epee team rose up to the challenge against tough competition to register a winning record going 19-17. Shomari Moore, a freshman from Brooklyn, N.Y., had a career-day on the piste with a 7-5 record and Yevgeniy Karyuchenko tallied five wins. Alex Cotter and Curtis McDowald combined to go 7-5 to round out the 19 wins for the men’s epee squad.

In the female saber competition, Karolina Cieslar for the second-straight day performed admirable on the strip, going 7-5 in just her second-career collegiate invitational.

Judith Russell picked up five wins to lead the Johnnies in foil, while Hunter Williams-Burrows posted four wins to lead all Red Storm males in foil.

The St. John’s fencing team has just over a month before its final invitational of the 2016-17 season, when the squad heads over to Philadelphia for the Temple Invitational. On Feb. 17, the Red Storm will send members to the Junior Olympic Fencing Championships held in Kansas City, Mo.
