PHILADELPHIA – In their final test before the NCAA Regionals in two weeks, the Red Storm fencing program tallied five victories at the Temple Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia.

The No. 8 team in the country, the Red Storm men’s team picked up triumphs against the No. 7 University of Pennsylvania, Stevens and Johns Hopkins. Currently receiving votes in the CollegeFencing 360 Poll, the women’s squad recorded victories over No. 7 Temple and Johns Hopkins, while facing off against four programs all inside the top eight of the poll.

The men’s epee squad was stellar on the piste all afternoon with an outstanding 33-12 record against fierce competition. Freshman Ivan Zagoruiko led the way with a 10-2 mark, while the senior Sean White notched nine victories. The four-man team defeated every school they fenced against on Saturday as Shomari Moore and Omari Smoak combined for 14 wins.

On the women’s side, the epee team also performed admirably on the piste with 26 victories, 13 of them coming from Veronika Zuikova. Dominique Tannous and Ally Ryf each added five apiece.

Tying with Zuikova for the most wins by a Johnny on Saturday was Karolina Cieslar, who also went 13-2 in women’s saber. Karolina Kaleta notched an impressive 10-5 record to help the saber squad nab 23 wins for the day.

The 2017 national epee champion, Andras Nemeth continued his strong campaign with a 9-3 record and the newcomer Vincent Mindelof added seven triumphs in men’s epee.

A pair of freshmen were solid in Philadelphia with Dalton Walker adding seven wins and Sal Centanni with six in saber. In women’s foil, Kayla Soulias and Judith Russell each picked up five victories, while Malcolm Jackson collected five in men’s epee.
