COLUMBUS, Ohio – After the first of four days of the 2012 NCAA Championships, the Red Storm sits in fifth place with 48 points. St. John’s is just three points behind Notre Dame, Penn State, and host school Ohio State for first place. Princeton occupies the fourth place spot with 50 points.

The No. 6 ranked women’s team was just one of five schools to qualify the maximum of six fencers.

With 19 total wins, the women’s foil team accumulated the most points out of the three weapons. Junior Evgeniya Kirpicheva went 10-4 and her classmate, junior Irina Koroleva, went 9-5.

Behind sophomore Anna Limbach’s 9-5 effort, the saber team put together 15 total wins. Limbach’s partner, redshirt senior Martyna Wieczorek, went 6-8.

Sophomore Alina Ferdman led women’s epee with a 9-5 effort. Sophomore Zsofia Fath went 5-9 to give the epee team 14 total points.

The women’s team hits the strip tomorrow for the semifinals and finals. They will air on ESPN 3 at 1:45 p.m.

The men’s team will begin NCAA Championship action on Saturday, March 24.
