• 2018 April North American Cup Results
QUEENS, N.Y.– Competing against some of the best fencers in the nation, Red Storm alum and 2016 Rio Olympic silver medalist, Daryl Homer took home gold, while Ben Natanzon claimed silver in saber this past weekend at the April North American Cup in Richmond, Va.
With a 6-0 record in pool play, Homer earned a bye in the table of 128 and then cruised past his next two opponents, outscoring them by a total of 17 touches. In the table of 16, the Olympic silver medalist edged out Christopher Walker, 15-14, and then notched a 15-7 victory to advance to the semifinals. Looking to stay perfect and move into the finals, Homer picked up a 15-11 bout victory to face current Red Storm fencer Natanzon in the finals. The Bronx product proved too much for the junior Natanzon, as Homer earned his second-straight 15-11 triumph to clinch gold at another North American Cup.
A two-time All-American, Natanzon shined on the piste this past weekend with a 5-1 mark in pool play before tallying back-to-back easy victories to move into the table of 16. Facing Peter Sounders, the Manalapan, N.J., native came up clutch with a touch at 14-all to earn the victory. Following two more wins for Natanzon, he took on Red Storm alum Homer and came up short in the finals to take home silver. Natanzon also claimed silver in the men’s saber team competition to complete a stellar weekend of fencing and clinched a spot to the USA Senior National team.
Freshman Sal Centanni also fenced in the saber competition and finished in 39th place with four triumphs.
Yesterday, former St. John’s national champion, Isis Washington placed 22nd in women’s epee after recording five victories.
Sophomore Shomari Moore also fenced outstanding on the strip with an eighth place finish in men’s epee. Following four wins in pool play, Moore won three-straight bouts before falling in the quarterfinals.
Three Red Storm alums also competed in the men’s epee draw as Adam Rodney highlighted the results with a 10th place finish. Cooper Schumacher, a 2017 national champion, placed 48th, while Benjamin Bratton came in 22nd to round out the trio.
Two current Johnnies finished in the top-25 as Ivan Zagoruiko finished 21st and Curtis McDowald came in 23rd as the duo combined for 10 wins. Zagoruiko knocked out Omari Smoak in the table of 64 to finish in 61st and Sean White placed 53rd. Schumacher and White also took home bronze in the men’s epee team competition.
