QUEENS, N.Y. – For the second-straight year, Red Storm fencing alumna Dagmara Wozniak took home silver in women’s saber at the December North American Cup this past weekend in Portland, Ore. Adam Rodney, an alumnus of St. John’s, also shined on the piste with a third-place finish in Division I men’s epee to snag bronze.
After dominating pool play with a 6-0 record, Wozniak earned a bye in the next round to advance to the table of 32. The 2016 Rio Olympic bronze medalist cruised past her next three opponents, outscoring them by a combined 18 touches to move into the semifinals. After a tightly contested, 15-14, victory, Wozniak fell just short of the gold medal, falling to Zara Moss by one touch in the finals to finish in second.
Following a second-place finish at the 2016 December NAC, Rodney went perfect in pool play and then won his next two bouts to set up a showdown with another former Red Storm fencer Benjamin Bratton in the table of 16. Rodney came away with the victory and advanced to the semifinals, before coming up short to take home bronze.
Bratton came in 15th place, while senior Sean White led all current St. John’s fencers with a 19th place finish after securing six triumphs. Shomari Moore earned himself a top-50 finish and classmate Omari Smoak placed 57th. The 2017 national champion in men’s epee, Cooper Schumacher came in 90th, while Alex Cotter wrapped up the Red Storm in epee with a 114th finish.
Junior Ben Natanzon went 5-1 in pool play action in men’s saber to earn a bye in the next round and followed it up with back-to-back 15-12 victories to move into the table of 16. In a thrilling bout, Natanzon came up short to Geoffrey Loss, 15-14, to finish in 12th. A 2016 graduate of St. John’s, Deniz Berkay won five bouts to finish in the top-40.
After going 4-2 in pool play, Isis Washington, who was the national champion in 2015 in women’s epee, cruised to victory in her next three bouts to advance to the table of 16. Washington then fell to Barbara VanBenthuysen to come in 12th place.
The St. John’s fencing team will send participants to the January North American Cup held in Virginia Beach, Va., from Jan. 5-8. The next dual-meet invitational for the Johnnies will be their lone home meet of the season on Jan. 20, and will be at Taffner Field House starting at 10 a.m.
