QUEENS, N.Y. – For the final time of the 2017-18 regular season, the St. John’s fencing team will hit the piste for a collegiate meet in Philadelphia for the Temple Invitational this Saturday, Feb. 24.
The men’s squad owns nine victories on the season and currently rank No. 8 in the nation in the latest CollegeFencing360 Poll. Two of the triumphs for the Johnnies came against Ivy League programs Yale and Brown, who are both receiving votes in the poll. At their lone home invitational, the Red Storm knocked off No. 3 Ohio State, 16-11, just over a month ago.
The men’s team will face off with the University of Pennsylvania, Penn State, Stevens, Johns Hopkins and Princeton. The Johnnies will look to avenge losses earlier in the season against Penn and Penn State.
Leading the squad in victories is senior epeeist Sean White and junior saber fencer Ben Natanzon with 29 wins apiece. Out of the three weapons, the men’s epee team has tallied the most wins with 107 and has seen action from five different fencers.
The 2017 national foil champion, Andras Nemeth led the way with a 10-2 record, while Shomari Moore notched nine triumphs at the 2017 Temple Invitational.
Sitting just outside the top 10 and receiving votes in the CollegeFencing360 Poll, the women’s team has picked up seven victories on the campaign. On Saturday, the squad will take on Penn, Penn State, Temple, Johns Hopkins and Princeton.
Sophomore sensation Karolina Cieslar tops all Red Storm fencers with a stellar 41-7 record in saber, including a perfect 18-0 mark at the Brandeis Invitational earlier this season. Veronika Zuikova has shined during her senior campaign with a 33-10 record in epee and the women’s saber trio has tallied 96 wins to this point.
At the 2017 Temple Invitational, Zuikova and Cieslar combined for a 23-3 record, while Ally Ryf went 7-5 in epee.
