10/18/2011 Baseball's Red-Black Intrasquad World Series Set To Begin Oct. 19Best-of-seven series at Kaiser Stadium is free to public. Brendan Monaghan is in his second season serving as the volunteer assistant coach for his alma mater, following a four-year career in the professional baseball ranks. Monaghan returns to Queens after spending the 2010 season playing for the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League. The catcher was a league all-star and batted .291 with 18 doubles, two home runs and 24 RBI in 72 games. Monaghan signed with the Baltimore Orioles as a free agent in 2007 and began his professional career with the Bluefield Orioles of the Rookie Appalachian League. The catcher batted .277 with eight doubles, four home runs and a team-high 38 RBI in 49 games for Bluefield. Monaghan spent the next two seasons with the Delmarva Shorebirds in the Class-A South Atlantic League, batting a combined .207 with 11 doubles, two home runs and 30 RBI in 86 games. A first team All-BIG EAST selection as a senior at St. John's, Monaghan had a .307 career average with 20 doubles and 59 RBI in 125 games, including 88 starts. The catcher was a National Strength and Conditioning Association All-American and the team MVP as a senior and helped the Red Storm to three NCAA Tournament appearances and two BIG EAST regular season titles.
