St. John's Opens BIG EAST Play With 19-7 Win Against Villanova|

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's baseball team combined for 23 hits, including eight doubles, in a 19-7 win against Villanova to open BIG EAST play. Brian Kemp was 5-for-5, while Carlos Del Rosario had a 4-for-5 day with four doubles to lead St. John's (9-7). Joe Panik added a three-run home run, while Jimmy Parque had four RBI. Nick Luisi (1-2) worked 5.0 innings to earn the win. Matt McFolling and Kyle Carver had two RBI apiece to lead Villanova (10-7).
Matt Szczur opened up a five-run third inning for Villanova with a single. After Joe Rosati was plunked, Dain Hall singled to load the bases. Joe Cotter then drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run. After a two-run single by Matt McFolling, Carver added a two-run double down the left field line and the Wildcats led 5-0.
St. John's responded in the bottom of the frame after Gino Matias led off with a single up the middle. Following a double by Kemp, Parque lifted a one-out sacrifice fly to put the Red Storm on the board.
With one out in the fourth, Greg Hopkins singled up the third base line and Del Rosario followed with a double. Panik then launched a three-run home run over the fence in right center field. After a pair of infield singles by Kemp and Matt Wessinger, Parque lined a two-run double over the head of the right fielder to give the Red Storm a 6-5 lead.
St. John's added four more runs in the fifth to take a 10-5 lead. Morris singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hopkins. Del Rosario followed with an RBI double before an RBI single up the middle by Matias. After a Kemp single, Wessinger lined a two-run double into right center field and put St. John's up 10-5 and chase Villanova starter Brian Streilein.
Dain Hall added a sacrifice fly in the sixth, while Matt Szczur added an RBI fielder's choice in the seventh as Villanova pulled to within 10-7.
Matias walked with one out in the seventh and came around to score on a triple by Kemp. After a Wessinger walk, Parque put the Red Storm up 12-7 with an RBI single. Benedetti then walked to the load the bases, before Morris drew a walk to force in a run. Hopkins then emptied the bases with a three-run double that gave St. John's a 16-7 lead. Del Rosario followed with a double, his fourth of the game, to plate a run and later scored on a wild pitch. A Kemp RBI single, his fifth hit of the game, put St. John's up 19-7.
St. John's faces Villanova at 1 p.m. on March 21 in the second game of the three-game set.
