April 10, 2015
QUEENS, N.Y. - Cody Stashak tossed 6.0 innings of one-run ball as St. John's scored a run in five different innings to notch a series-opening 5-1 victory against Seton Hall. Alex Caruso went 3-for-3 with three runs scored to lead St. John's (17-11, 4-0), while Robbie Knightes went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Zach Lauricella finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, and Tyler Sanchez had a solo home run. Stashak (5-3) allowed just four hits, while striking out five and walking one to earn the win. Joe Poduslenko went 3-for-4 and Zack Weigel went 1-for-4 with a triple and a run scored for Seton Hall (16-11, 3-1). Zach Prendergast (4-3) took the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, in 4.0 innings.
Seton Hall grabbed a 1-0 lead after just one batter as Weigel led off the game with a triple off the right field wall, but scored with an error on the play.
St. John's promptly responded and tied the game with a run in the bottom of the first. Caruso led off with a single and took second on a passed ball before a Michael Donadio single left the Red Storm with runners on the corners. Knightes then knotted the score at 1-1 with an RBI fielder's choice.
Seton Hall threatened in the second as a leadoff error and a one-out single gave the Pirates a pair of baserunners, but Stashak got out of the inning with a lineout double play.
The Red Storm took advantage of a leadoff double to take the lead with a run in the second. Jarred Mederos led off the inning with a double into right center before Troy Dixon made it a 2-1 ballgame with an RBI single up the middle.
The Pirates had the leadoff man reach in the third, but a strike-`em-out-throw-`em-out double play and a groundout ended the inning.
St. John's put the leadoff man on for the third-straight inning in the third frame and scored another run to grab a 3-1 advantage. Caruso got things started with a walk before a Lauricella double set up runners on second and third. Knightes followed with an RBI groundout to give the Red Storm a two-run lead.
Stashak worked a 1-2-3 fourth frame and stranded a runner at third in the fifth. Poduslenko reached on an infield single with one out in the fifth inning before advancing to third on a pair of wild pitches. Stashak got out of the jam, however, with an infield popup and a strikeout.
St. John's used the long ball to add a run in the fifth as Sanchez launched a solo home run to left to lead off the frame, chase Prendergast and give the Red Storm a 5-1 advantage.
Matt Clancy took the mound in the seventh and used an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play to get around a one-out single.
The Red Storm then added a run in the seventh after Caruso reached on an infield single, but advanced to second with an errant throw on the play. Lauricella followed with a one-out RBI double and St. John's led 5-1.
Clancy had two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 eighth frame and Joe Kuzia worked a scoreless ninth to end the game.
St. John's continues its series against Seton Hall on April 11 with a 1 p.m. game on ESPN3.
