Lauricella, Mederos Combine For Eight RBI As St. John's Defeats Georgetown, 11-8

BETHESDA, Md. - Zach Lauricella and Jarred Mederos finished with four RBI apiece and were two of four players to register multi-hit games as St. John's pounded out a season-high 18 hits in an 11-8 win against Georgetown. Lauricella finished 4-for-5 with two doubles, while Mederos went 3-for-5 with a home run to lead St. John's (26-14, 9-3). Robert Wayman added a 2-for-5 day and Michael Donadio finished 3-for-6 with one RBI. Cody Stashak (7-4) struck out eight and surrendered three runs in 6.2 innings of work for the win. Ryan Busch had a home run and three RBI for Georgetown (22-20, 5-5), while Matt Hollenbeck (2-4) took the loss after allowing five runs in 6.0 innings.

St. John's used a two-run double and a two-run home run to take a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Wayman started things with a one-out single into center before Donadio grounded a single through the right side, but advanced to second as Wayman beat the throw to third. After Lauricella put the Red Storm on the board with a two-run double to left center, Mederos launched a two-out, two-run home run to left.

Stashak struck out two in a 1-2-3 first inning and retired his first five batters before allowing a two-out single in the second. The righty ended the inning with his fourth strikeout.

A leadoff double by Donadio set the table for a run in the third inning as St. John's extended its lead. Lauricella immediately followed with an RBI single into center as the Red Storm grabbed a 5-0 lead.

Stashak added two more strikeouts as part of a 1-2-3 third frame before Georgetown got on the board with a run in the fourth. Eric Webber drew a leadoff walk to set the table before Nick Collins doubled to the wall in right field. A.C. Carter then made it a 5-1 ballgame with an RBI groundout.



The Hoyas pulled to within 5-2 in the fifth as Busch opened the frame with a solo shot to left field.

St. John's then strung together three-straight one-out hits to add two runs in the seventh. Lauricella started things with a one-out double to right center before Robbie Knightes singled into left, but advanced to second as Lauricella was held up and chased back to third. Mederos then flared a two-run single into left center to give the Red Storm a 7-2 lead.

Georgetown added a run in the seventh and chased Stashak from the ballgame. Busch singled up the middle with one out before Charlie Dillon made it 7-3 with an RBI double to the wall in right center. Dillon then moved to third on a groundout and St. John's went to the bullpen for Joe Kuzia, who induced a groundout to end the inning.

The Red Storm sent nine men to the plate and took advantage of a two-out error to extend its lead with a four-run eighth. Alex Caruso led off the frame with a walk before Wayman singled to set up runners on the corners. After Donadio followed with an RBI groundout and Lauricella added an RBI single, Mederos reached on a two-out error to extend the inning. Troy Dixon then lined a two-run single into right as the Red Storm opened up an 11-3 advantage.

Georgetown plated three two-out runs in the eighth as a Chase Bushor RBI single and a Busch two-run single made it an 11-6 ballgame.

The Hoyas got a two-out, two-run home run from Collins in the ninth for the final 11-8 margin.

St. John's continues its series against Georgetown on May 2 with a 7 p.m. game.
