QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's grabbed an early 3-2 lead, but Notre Dame used a six-run fifth to defeat the Red Storm, 15-8, on Senior Day. Carlos Del Rosario was 4-for-5 and Matt Wessinger was 3-for-5 with two RBI to pace St. John's (28-20, 15-11). Brian Kemp and Paul Karmas also added two hits apiece for the Red Storm. Jeremy Barnes was 4-for-6 with three RBI for Notre Dame (33-20, 15-11) and five different players added two RBI.
The Irish threatened in the first, loading the bases with three singles. Starter Bruce Kern, however, would get out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts.
St. John's took a 1-0 lead in the first. Kemp singled on the first Brian Dupra offering of the inning, but was erased on a fielder's choice. After Karmas doubled to set up second and third, Tim Morris plated a run with a sacrifice fly.
Del Rosario doubled to lead off a one-run second inning as the Red Storm went up 2-0. After moving to third on a groundout, Del Rosario scored on a Joe Witkowski RBI groundout.
Notre Dame tied the score at 2-2 in the third. After a one-out single by Golden Tate, Barnes connected on a two-run home run over the scoreboard in left center.
The Red Storm, though, retook the lead in the third. Once again Kemp led off with a single, this time on a slow infield grounder. Kemp then stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a Jimmy Parque sacrifice fly.
The Irish would retake the lead, 4-3, in the fourth. Following a lead off single by Mick Doyle, AJ Pollock launched a two-out, two-run home run over the fence in left field.
Notre Dame then took a 10-3 lead with six runs in the fifth. Barnes opened the inning with a double off reliever Eddie Medina before an Evan Sharpley walk gave Notre Dame runners on first and third. Brayden Ashdown then gave the Irish a 5-3 lead with a sacrifice fly. Back-to-back walks would load the bases before Cameron McConnell lined a two RBI single into left center and Greg Sherry followed with an RBI sacrifice bunt. A Tate two-run triple chased Medina before Rich Armento recorded the final out.
Doyle added a sacrifice fly in the sixth to give Notre Dame an 11-3 lead.
St. John's answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Del Rosario singled with one out before Wessinger doubled to give St. John's runners on second and third. Danny Benedetti plated Del Rosario with an RBI groundout before a Gino Matias RBI double made the score 11-5.
The Irish went up 15-5 in the eighth. Tate walked to open the frame and later scored on a Barnes RBI double. A single and a walk loaded the bases before Ryan Connolly blooped a two-run single into right field that chased Armento. Gabe Guerrero entered and allowed a sacrifice fly before retiring the next two batters.
St. John's added a run in the bottom of eighth to make it 15-6. Wessinger singled before Benedetti reached on an error. With runners on first and third, Scott Ferrara sent an RBI single through the right side.
The Red Storm plated two more runs in the ninth. Kevin Watkins, Greg Hopkins and Del Rosario singled to load the bases with one out in the ninth. Wessinger then followed with a two-run single through the left side.
