CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -
St. John's plated three unanswered runs to erase an early 3-0 deficit, but could never take the lead and was defeated by East Carolina, 6-4, and eliminated from the NCAA Tournament. Jeremy Baltz was 1-for-3 with two RBI, while Jimmy Brennan and Frankie Schwindel had an RBI apiece to pace St. John's (36-22). Eddie Medina (3-2) took the loss in relief, allowing two runs, one earned, in 3.1 innings of work. Corey Thompson had two RBI to lead East Carolina (41-20), while Brad Mincey (6-4) earned the win after allowing just one run in 5.0 innings of relief.
Starter Brendan Lobban needed just five pitches to work a 1-2-3 first inning, but allowed the first two batters to reach in the second as East Carolina took a 1-0 lead. After a lead off walk, Zach Wright singled to give the Pirates two on with no outs. Lobban then retired the next two batters, but Jack Reinheimer followed with a two-out bloop RBI single into centerfield and ECU led 1-0.
The Pirates took advantage of a lead off walk and used the long ball to add two runs in the third. After Philip Clark drew a walk to open the inning, Thompson cleared the fences in left field and ECU grabbed a 3-0 lead.
St. John's answered with two runs in the third after Matt Wessinger set the table with a lead off single. Schwindel then sent a come-backer to the mound and Kevin Brandt tried for the out at second, but the throw was in the dirt and everyone was safe. An errant pick off attempt set up runners on the corners before Brennan grounded an RBI single through the right side. A Pat Talbut sacrifice bunt set up runners on second and third before Joe Panik was intentionally walked to load the bases. Baltz was then plunked to force in a run as St. John's pulled to within 3-2, but Brandt used a strikeout and a fly out to strand three runners.
The Red Storm used a pair of one-out extra base hits to tie the game at 3-3 in the fourth. After Wessinger tripled to the wall in right field, Schwindel ripped an RBI double inside the third base bag to tie the score.
ECU responded, however, to retake a 4-3 lead with a run in the top of the fifth on a Chase McDonald RBI groundout.
The Pirates loaded the bases with one out to add a run in the sixth inning. Following a lead off single, Medina issued back-to-back one-out walks to load the bases before Clark laid down a squeeze bunt to put ECU up 5-3.
Matt Carasiti entered with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh and needed just two pitches to induce a pop up and a fly out to escape the jam.
St. John's plated a run without the benefit of a hit in the seventh to pull within 5-4. Schwindel was plunked to lead off the inning before Brennan drew a four-pitch walk and Talbut set up second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Panik was then intentionally walked to load the bases before Baltz followed with an RBI fielder's choice.
ECU added an insurance run in the ninth as John Wooten led off with a double and was moved to third with a sacrifice bunt. Mike Ussery then blooped an RBI single just inside the right field line to give the Pirates a 6-4 advantage.
A two-out single by Talbut in the bottom of the ninth brought the tying run to the plate, but Mincey induced a game-ending groundout.
