Jan. 2, 2013
QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's baseball assistant coach Mike Hampton has been ranked No. 3 on a list of the top assistant coaches in collegiate baseball as compiled by Baseball America. Hampton, who serves as both hitting coach and recruiting coordinator, is in his 12th season on the Red Storm staff.
Baseball America determined the list by asking current Division I head coaches to list three prospects among the ranks of current assistants, excluding their own staffs. The rankings represent the top 10 assistant coaches based on votes received.
Since joining the program in 2002, Hampton has helped St. John's reach the NCAA Tournament seven times and win a total of six BIG EAST crowns, including two Tournament titles and four regular season championships.
Hampton has recruited 35 players that have gone on to play professionally, including 2011 first round draft pick, All-American and Brooks Wallace Award Finalist Joe Panik, and 2012 second round selection and two-time All-American Jeremy Baltz, who also earned both NCBWA National Freshman Hitter of the Year and Louisville Slugger National Freshman Player of the Year honors in 2010 and became the first BIG EAST player to earn three first team all-conference honors since 2002-04.
Hampton, in his role as hitting coach, has also led St. John's to a top 10 national ranking in batting average on three occasions. The Red Storm ranked sixth in the country in 2009 (.349), seventh in 2007 (.326) and eighth in 2006 (.328).
An All-American at Clemson and a fourth round draft pick in the 1994 MLB Draft, Hampton began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Clemson (1998-99). Hampton has also served as hitting coach at West Virginia (1999-2001) and as both a head coach (2001) and an assistant coach (1999) in the Coastal Plains League.
