QUEENS, N.Y. -
With the start of the 2018 St. John’s Baseball campaign less than a month away, the BIG EAST announced on Thursday that the Red Storm’s May 18th showdown with Butler at Jack Kaiser Stadium will be broadcast live nationally on CBS Sports Network.
The contest is set to begin at 4 p.m. and is currently scheduled to be the Johnnies’ penultimate outing of the 2018 regular season.
Last season in Indianapolis, the Red Storm swept a three-game series from Butler in thrilling fashion, as two of the three tilts went into extra innings.
In 2017, the Red Storm won 42 games and made its 36th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, a total that ranks in the top 10 among Division I schools.
The Red Storm welcomes back plenty of talent from its 2017 NCAA Tournament squad, including five position starters and all three members of the weekend rotation. Led by sophomore Sean Mooney, who became just the second player in BIG EAST history to be named the conference’s pitcher of the year and freshman of the year simultaneously, the Red Storm pitching staff returns 11 hurlers this season, including five who made at least 10 appearances with ERAs under 2.50 in 2017.
St. John’s has won more BIG EAST Tournament titles and Regular Season Championships than any other school in conference history, claiming eight of each since the league began sponsoring baseball in 1985. Ed Blankmeyer, entering his 23rd year at the helm of the program, has been named BIG EAST Coach of the Year a league-record seven times, including his most recent accolade in the spring of 2017. Earlier this month, Blankmeyer became the third St. John’s coach inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
