QUEENS, N.Y. - Senior reliever Joe Kuzia has been selected as one of 37 pitchers named to the initial Watch List for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Stopper of the Year Award, an honor given to the top NCAA Division I relief pitcher in the nation.
A first team ABCA All-Northeast Region selection and a first team All-BIG EAST honoree last season, Kuzia led the league and ranked tied for 19th nationally with 13 saves. The righty made 28 appearances, fifth-most in the league, and went 0-2 with a 0.97 ERA in 37.0 innings of work.
Kuzia, who worked 24 scoreless outings, totaled 29 strikeouts and issued just nine walks. The reliever allowed a .179 opponent batting average, while surrendering just three extra-base hits. Kuzia did not allow his first earned run of the season until his 25th appearance, a span of 34.0 innings of work.
The 13-save performance a season ago tied Kuzia for second in the St. John's single-season record books.
A midseason Watch List will be released during the week of April 20. Following the regular season, the national saves leader and four other relievers will be selected as finalists and announced on June 3. The winner, selected by the NCBWA All-America Committee, will be announced during the College World Series.
