BIG EAST Release
QUEENS, N.Y. - For the second time in as many opportunities, Sean Mooney has been named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, it was announced on Tuesday morning by the league office. In addition, John Valente has earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Mooney, the 2017 BIG EAST Pitcher and Freshman of the Year, continued the stellar start to his 2018 campaign in the No. 20 Red Storm's 8-0 win over UC Davis on Sunday. The sophomore from Marmora, N.J., tossed five scoreless innings against the Aggies, surrendering just three hits and a walk while striking out six. Since allowing a single earned run in the Red Storm's season debut at Campbell, Mooney has now thrown 13.1 frames without allowing a runner to cross home plate. On the season, the 2017 National Freshman Pitcher of the Year has picked up a win in all three of his appearances and sports an ERA of 0.56. Additionally, he has compiled a 0.81 WHIP and has limited opponents to a .158 batting average.
In the Red Storm's Sunday doubleheader against the Aggies, Valente had arguably the best day of his already stellar St. John's career, going 4-for-8 with two home runs, five RBIs and four runs scored. In the first game of the twin bill, the New Rochelle native went 3-for-4 with a solo shot and three runs scored, helping the Johnnies cruise to an 8-0 victory. In the doubleheader's second contest, Valente started off the scoring with a three-run shot in the second before adding a sac fly in the fifth to set a new career high with four RBIs. On the season, Valente leads the team and ranks second in the conference with a .425 batting average and has hit safely in all nine of the team's games. Dating back to last season, Valente's hitting streak stands at 12.
