May 5, 2016
QUEENS, N.Y. - Jesse Berardi, Alex Caruso and Thomas Hackimer have each earned first team Academic All-District accolades as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The honors give the St. John’s baseball program at least one Academic All-District selection in each of the past 11 seasons, and also mark the second first team selections for both Caruso (2014) and Hackimer (2015).
Berardi, who has a 3.83 GPA as a finance major, has a .317 batting average and ranks tied for first in the BIG EAST in both RBI (36) and runs scored (40). The shortstop has appeared in 41 games, all starts, and has six doubles, three triples and a team-leading five home runs. Berardi ranks second in the league with a team-high .507 slugging percentage and has also posted a .412 on-base percentage.
A sport management major with a 3.62 GPA, Caruso is one of three Red Storm players to start all 42 games this season. The outfielder has a .318 batting average and leads the BIG EAST in on-base percentage (.474), while tying for the league-lead with 40 runs scored. Caruso, who has drawn a league-high 39 walks, adds seven doubles, one triple and 19 RBI.
Hackimer, a physics major with a 3.62 GPA, is 5-0 with six saves and a 0.22 ERA in 20 appearances this season. The reliever has racked up 58 strikeouts in 40.1 innings of work, while limiting the opposition to just a .094 batting average. One of 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award, the righty appears on the midseason watch list for both the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award and the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award, and was named to the initial watch list for the National Pitcher of the Year Award.
As first team Academic All-District selections, all three players will be added to the ballot for Academic All-America consideration.
