QUEENS, N.Y. - After helping St. John's win its conference-record eighth BIG EAST regular season crown with a sweep against Xavier as part of a 4-0 week, Ryan McCormick has been named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week and Jarred Mederos has earned a spot on the Weekly Honor Roll.
McCormick tossed his first-career complete game shutout to lead St. John's to a 5-0 win against Xavier (May 9). The righty racked up a career-high nine strikeouts and allowed just three singles, while walking two and facing just five batters more than the minimum.
The righty, who improved to 6-0 in six BIG EAST starts and 9-1 overall, worked five 1-2-3 innings and retired seven-straight batters to end the game.
The complete game shutout was the first by a Red Storm pitcher since Kyle Hansen went the distance and blanked Cincinnati on April 22, 2012.
Mederos hit safely in all four games and batted .429 (6-for-14) with seven RBI, including a pair of multi-RBI performances. The senior had one home run, a walk-off, and posted a .643 slugging percentage to go with four runs scored and a .500 on-base percentage.
Mederos had a three-run, walk-off home run and finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored in midweek action against Albany. The shortstop went 1-for-3 with an RBI in the opener against Xavier and was 1-for-3 with three RBI in game two. Mederos was 1-for-3 with a run scored in the finale.
