QUEENS, N.Y. - Stephen Rivera worked 5.0 shutout innings, while Robert Case and Vince Tranchina had two RBI apiece as Red defeated Black, 6-1, to take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven Intrasquad World Series. Brendan Lobban added six strikeouts in 4.0 innings of one-run ball to help lead Red. Dan Roland had two hits and a run scored to pace Black, while Sean Hagan racked up five strikeouts in 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
After stranding a pair of runners in the bottom of the first inning, Red plated a pair of runs in the second. Back-to-back walks opened the inning before a sacrifice set up runners on second and third with one out. Tranchina then lined a two-run single and Red went up 2-0.
Rivera scattered three hits through the first three innings, but worked 1-2-3 innings in both the fourth and fifth frames en route to retiring the final eight batters he faced.
Black starter Brad Bellinger was lifted after 4.0 innings of work and reliever Michael Corona retired the first two batters in the fifth before Red put together a two-out rally to take a 4-0 advantage. Three-consecutive singles by Case, Sean O'Hare and Kevin Grove loaded the bases before back-to-back walks to Michael Bradshaw and Bret Dennis forced in a pair of runs.
Red chased Corona in the sixth and plated two more runs to take a 6-0 lead. Pat Talbut singled with one out before Zach Lauricella was plunked to set up runners on first and second. After a double steal set up runners on second and third, Case made it a 6-0 game with a two-run single.
After relieving Rivera in to start the sixth, Lobban faced the minimum through his first three innings of work before Black got on the board with a run in the ninth. Roland and Julien Plana put together back-to-back one-out singles before a two-out RBI single by Matt Wessinger made it a 6-1 game.
The schedule for games six and seven has been altered. Game six will now be played at noon on Sunday, Oct. 30, while game seven will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at noon.
