Head Coach Steve Lavin

Opening Statement:

"I thought Robert Morris came out and beat us to the punch in every phase of the game. It wasn't until the eight-minute mark that we began to play with the necessary aggressiveness and purpose needed to close the gap. Tonight was disappointing because we didn't bring forth the effort or purposeful play that would've allowed us to be competitive."

On the season as a whole:

"We were disappointed we didn't make the NCAA Tournament, but we played very well in the second half of the season."

On the final push during the season:

"We've played as well as anybody in the league in the last two months of BIG EAST play. Tonight we were beaten soundly by a good team. We did not play well in any aspect of play."

Junior Guard Jamal Branch

On playing against a hot-shooting Robert Morris team:

“It’s hard when a team gets hot. It gets tough, they got some confidence and everything was going in. We just tried to play hard and contain it.“

On his mindset after not making the NCAA Tournament:

“We were pretty upset that we didn’t make the tournament but they just started hot and everything that went up, went in. We kept testing it, but it kept falling. “

On thoughts on ending the season with this loss:

“It is very disappointing. We had a chance to play all of our games for the NIT here. I just felt like we didn’t give it our all out there until the last seven minutes of the game. It was very disappointing. I think we didn’t give it our all because we were a little frustrated about the run they made and we started going on our own island. We were doing things we should have never done. We should have kept it simple and stuck with each other. “

On his overall thoughts on the season:

“I’m very disappointed, our goal was to make the NCAA tournament, do well in the BIG EAST and we were short of that.”

Sophomore Guard/Forward Max Hooper

On the half time locker room speech:

“[Coach] said that Robert Morris is a team that will slow down the pace and that there are plenty of possessions left in the game and that we can keep chipping away at the lead progressively as the game goes on. We hoped to cut the lead down and continue to decrease the margin. We weren’t able to do that, but that was our mindset.“

On the team’s mental approach to this opportunity:

“I think there was some frustration about not making the NCAA tournament, but before the game I felt a good vibe and good energy. I thought we were going to come out strong. I felt like we had turned the page. We didn’t make the NCAA Tournament, but I thought we had a good resolve about it. Credit Robert Morris because they made shots and executed their game plan. Once they got a head start, you saw a dip in our energy and the game was lost at that point already.“

On thoughts on energizing the team by making 3-pointers:

“When I came out and hit my first three in the first half, they were still scoring and the margin wasn’t decreasing, but I personally felt more energy in the arena and the fans started getting into the game. We went on a mini spurt where we got a couple of steals and a couple of my threes were thrown. It resulted as a catalyst to some of those things, but ultimately we came up short.“

Robert Morris Head Coach Andrew Toole

Opening Statement:

“Great win for our program and a terrific performance by our entire team. Lucky [Jones] and Karvel [Anderson] led the way with their performance. I am really excited for them and the way they played. They came into this game wanting to continue their season and that is exactly what they have done. We talked extensively during the week about trying to get over the disappointment of our championship game loss and the only way to make it better was to go on the floor and play the way that we believe we are capable. We came out and proved that tonight.”

On the 3-point shootout:

“We are a team that has made threes and can make threes in bunches during points of the season, but it is not something that we specifically try to do. We just try to get a good shot for our teammate being that they are open, ready, and shoot at a high percentage. We discussed St. John’s ability to block shots and we felt that if we can collapse their defense, we would end up with some good opportunities for great shots.”

Senior Guard Karvel Anderson

On the effort and desire to win the game:

“Many teams after losing or not making the NCAA Tournament come in with their heads down. They might feel that the NIT is not worth their time, but for us this was another opportunity to showcase who we are and how tough our program is.”

On preparing for St. John’s:

“I sensed in us that we were ready and we were prepared for whatever they had coming for us. With the short amount of time we had, Coach prepared us pretty well and my teammates’ mindset was to win at all costs.”

Junior Guard/Forward Lucky Jones

On St. John’s:

“They came and tried to stay aggressive with us, but we just followed the formula and Coach continued to tell us what was coming next.  As long as we changed sides and took great shots, they were not going to stand that for the whole game.”
