St. John’s Head Coach Steve Lavin

On the game:
“I told the team after the game that the style of play in this game is similar to what we are going to see in the majority of BIG EAST games, so it’s a great learning experience. As disappointed as we are in the loss, there are some pulls and takeaways that will be valuable for us as we move forward in the season. Some of the positives were coming from six down to going up eight, it showed some resiliency. The ability to take a punch and counterpunch, I thought was a positive. We competed against a team that has more size and depth, but we competed well on the boards. The disappointment was the turnovers and some shot selection that we need to clean-up in certain critical stretches and then defensive discipline.”

On the team’s growth:
“You can see the growth from game to game going back to the exhibitions. I had a good feeling coming in to tonight that we were in a good place. I was just generally concerned about the lack of experience and depth. In terms of our quickness, skill, camaraderie and cohesiveness – those aspects have our players and staff believing that we can compete with top competition. Naturally, tonight demonstrated that we have a long way to go but there are some real positive takeaways from this game.”

St. John’s Sophomore Guard Nurideen Lindsey

On Playing In Madison Square Garden:
“It was exciting tonight. The fans were really into it. I think our style of basketball will be just as exciting as last year. Last year, they did a great job of setting the table for us and I think it will be an exciting season.”
